Safety Regulations for Hand Luggage

Hand luggage must not contain sharp objects with a blade length of more than six centimeters, weapons, toy pistols, sprays, scissors or blunt objects capable of causing injury.
Since 1 September 2015, extended safety regulations have applied to explosives controls at European airports. Passengers, cabin baggage and electronic equipment must also be checked for traces of explosives.

Size and Weight of Cabin Baggage

All airlines place limits on the number, the size, and the weight of what you may carry onto a flight with you. Check with your airline for any specific hand luggage policies and the number of items of baggage that may be taken onto the aircraft.
IATA, the International Air Transport Association, recommends a total length, width and height of 115 cm in terms of the size of the hand luggage. Many airlines report maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm for carry-on luggage; the weight limits vary between 5 kg (Air China) and 23 kg (British Airways) per carry-on.

Carriage of Liquids

The following safety regulations on hand luggage apply to all departures and connecting flights from EU airports, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland:

  • You may still carry liquids, creams, pastes, gels, aerosols, etc. in your hand luggage in containers of up to 100 ml (3.5 fluid ounces, UK) in volume.
  • These must be packed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag of up to one liter in volume.
  • One bag is permitted per person.
  • The bag must be no larger than 20 cm x 20 cm (8 in x 8 in) and all items must fit inside so that it closes properly.
  • At security control the bag must be placed separately on the conveyor belt for screening.
  • Liquid items larger than 100 ml should be packed in your hold luggage, otherwise they will be confiscated.

The transportation of medications, baby food and special nutrition needed on board is permitted outside of the plastic bag.
In the Heinemann Duty Free Shop in the departure hall you will find not only monthly special offers but also low-priced 500 ml non-carbonated water for only 1 Euro!

Liquids include

Water and other drinks, soups, syrups, creams, gels, pastes and toothpaste, lotions and oils, perfumes, mascara, sprays, hair an shower gels, liquid-solid mixtures, contents of pressurized containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants any other item of similar consistence.

The following items must be presented separately at the security checkpoints:

  • the transparent plastic container, with maximum volume of 100 ml (3.5 fluid ounces, UK) each
  • electronic equipment (laptop, mp3 players, mobile devices, etc)
  • jackets and coats
  • all items purchased in airport shops
Please Note:

Items and bags not meeting these requirements may not be taken on board the aircraft.
All items you purchase on board must be transported in a sealed plastic bag and marked with the flight number and date. Cabin crew on board the aircraft will be happy to do this for you. In the event that you urgently require other liquids and wish to check these in with your luggage, please pack these in such a way that they are secure against knocks, leakage and breakage. We cannot accept liability for any damage to luggage that has been checked in. EU regulations for cabin baggage apply to all destinations from Austria, including the USA. Subject to certain conditions, the new regulations still permit passengers to buy larger quantities of liquids at airport shops inside the security chekpoint.

Per person over 17 years, 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 g of smoking tobacco may be carried.

Special Service For Passengers: Prohibited Objects Will Be Forwarded

Since 2001, Salzburg Airport has offered passengers the option of storing and, after their return, receiving back any prohibited objects which were not permitted on board the aircraft, for a charge of only €4. This service is a convenience which is only of benefit to passengers who will be returning to Salzburg.

Since June 2007, the company Securitas — responsible for the security controls at Salzburg Airport — will forward on demand items prohibited by EU regulations such as knives, nail files, cosmetics etc. to the passenger's home address (€10 for mailing in envelope, €15 mailing in postal package).

This service, unique in Austria, has been well-received by the passengers at Salzburg Airport.
