In a joint project with Austro Control, Salzburger Flughafen GmbH is to replace the 40-year-old tower with a new modern structure. Some 53 metres high, the new control tower will be taken over by Austro Control as early as 2014, and will e equipped with the latest in flight control technology.
The present tower no longer meets the future structural requirements of modern flight control in Europe. With the new structure, an airport control centre is beeing created that is both contemporary and also qeuipped for future needs.
Particularly important is the redundant (i.e. fail-safe) energy supply which will ensure safe and orderly processing of flight operations at Salzburg Airport at all times.

The new tower will be built 35 metres west of the existing control tower. Following an EU-wide two-stage tender process, the project submitted by the joint venture Halle 1 / Herbrich / IPC was selected. The construction costs for the new tower excluding the flight control systems will be around € 14 million.
Salzburg is the most important regional airport in Austria and is an international gateway to the world for the entire region. The new tower at the airport is a real milestone and a widely visible symbol of modernity and safety in air traffic.
