Farewell after 36 years at the Airport

14.12.2017: “Captain” Roland Hermann says goodbye after 36 years / Airport staff wishes “blue skies” / 13362 days of work for the airport / Hermann is looking back to a period full of events

An era is ending at Salzburg Airport, because on December 31st 2017 Roland Hermann, Managing Director of Salzburg Airport, is retiring. For more than 36 years Roland Hermann has significantly determined the airport´s success, which led Salzburg to becoming the largest regional airport in Austria with about 1.9 million passengers.

At the end of this year Roland Hermann is leaving the company. On December 13th, at the Christmas party, the staff had the opportunity to say farewell.

“Dear Roland, for many years you have been an excellent captain in charge of “Salzburg Airport Airlines” with almost exclusively “happy landings”. Even, if your term is not ending before New Year´s Eve, we, the entire staff of Salzburg Airport, would like to thank you and wish you all the best for the future. You have worked in so many capacities over the years: authorized officer, managing director, marketing manager, aviation manager, managing director of Salzburg Airport Services, colleague and friend. Even in difficult times, the wellbeing of your employees and the company were always most important for you. We wish you and your family all the best for and hope you will enjoy your well-earned retirement”, says Norbert Gruber, Chairman of the Works Committee.

“Salzburg Airport is not only an important economic factor for the Cty and the Province of Salzburg, but also for the area Innviertel to Southeast-Bavaria and Tyrolean lowlands. The airport as a company enjoys high reputation in Austria, but also across the border in Bavaria. This is one of the main accomplishments of Roland Hermann. I would like to thank the departing Managing Director for his commitment and professional contribution for the airport during the last decades”, says Christian Stöckl, Chariman of the board and Vice Governor of the Province of Salzburg.

Today the airport has – together with its subsidiaries – about 375 employees. In total, about 1.500 people work at the airport itself or for the companies situated at the airport. Austria´s largest regional airport handles almost 1.9 million passengers a year. A key milestone in 2017 was the Eurowings-base in Salzburg, which has become very important

for the future development of the airport. By the way: an annual net profit of 5 million Euros could be attained!

“I know and value Roland Hermann for his enormous know-how in aviation and his passion for flying. He succeeded in establishing numerous new flight routes from and to Salzburg and had a leading part in the airport´s success story. I wish him all the best for this new – and hopefully quieter – stage of life”, says Salzburg´s Mayor Harald Preuner.

Salzburg Airport will be managed by an airport- and airline professional in future, because from January 1st 2018, Bettina Ganghofer, who has been the Managing Director since October 16th 2017, will then solely be responsible for all matters.

“I am very pleased to be in Salzburg, where I meanwhile feel quite at home. During the last few weeks I had the chance to really get to know the airport. It is a great company and I am very much looking forward to any future challenges. I would like to thank CEO Roland Hermann who is handing over a healthy and well organized company as well as the entire staff, who welcomed me very openly and heartily. For the future I wish Roland Hermann all the best”, says Managing Director, Bettina Ganghofer.

Roland Hermann (Juli 1st 1981 – December 31st 2017)

Roland Hermann was born in St. Veit an der Glan and is a proud father of four. Before he started as Aviation Manager at Salzburg Airport, he was en route as a professional pilot most of the time, learning a lot about other countries and people. In 1990 he was granted power of attorney and became responsible for the fields aviation development, marketing, advertising, passenger and ramp handling, freight services and environment. From then on he was responsible for more than 100 employees and workers at Salzburg Airport. In 2001 he became managing director of Salzburg Airport Services, a 100% subsidiary of Salzburg Airport.

Some of the major key milestones unter his leadership were:
the construction of terminal 1 with an expansion from 6 to 21 check-in-counters, improved approach procedures, the implementation of the first digitized instrument landing system in Austria, a system for recording aircraft noise events as well as flight routes and a leading role in attracting Red Bull to open their business location “Hangar 7” on airport grounds.

In addition, he concentrated on strengthening relations with new airline-partners with a special focus on international airline alliances like Star Alliance, oneworld and Skyteam. The beginning of the so-called “Low Cost-Era” in Austria with flight connections to England, Ireland and Germany is also associated with his name. His motto is: “Quality before quantity!”
